Perfect Form: Changing the Ideal Gymnast is a 27-minute documentary that explores the stereotype of the ideal gymnast, which is presented in the media. With the “perfect 10 complex” set forth in the 1970s by Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci, a push for perfection is embodied in women’s gymnastics. This stereotype can cause gymnasts to believe they need to be younger and smaller in order to be successful. This documentary explores this stereotype, how it is perpetuated in the media, and how it is changing. By looking at the comebacks of the 20-something-year-old gymnasts (such as Mohini Bhardwaj, Shannon Miller-Phillips, and Kim Zmeskal-Burdette), this documentary challenges the stereotype and explains why older, more mature gymnasts can also be competitive in elite gymnastics. By examining past and present gymnasts, the documentary establishes what is to be the future of women’s gymnastics.
Those interested in the documentary might also enjoy reading Perfect Form's accompanying paper that explores the different topics covered in the documentary and explains some of the decisions and problems we encountered creating it. The paper rationalizes why the topic is important to study. Then, it justifies the need to present the topic in the form of a documentary, discuss previous literature on the topic, and explain the documentary’s focus and organization. Last, the paper lists the interviewees and discuss the many things we learned while creating the documentary. |
